Dear Hill Community,
The last day of school is this Thursday! If you have not yet done so, please ensure you turn in your device and/or library books tomorrow to your teacher as the deadline is passed if it is applicable to you. We will have periodic emails over the summer, but this will be our last scheduled weekly communication for now (which is why it is a bit longer). I want to thank youhttps://austinisd.us001-rapididentity.com/ all again for your support during another successful school year, and please know how grateful I am for the opportunity to lead this amazing campus community. Thank you for ensuring your students do Dillo Best reading and outdoor play this summer as we encourage those healthy choices.
5th Grade Parents/Guardians: Check out the 5th grade email this week for details on the last day of school. The week will end with our annual graduation walk that will take place around 2:15 on Thursday. Families can begin lining the front sidewalk in the carline drive at 2:00 if you are interested in seeing our 5th graders come by. Parents/guardians will not be able to view inside the building. Once the graduation walk is over, you can walk around to our 5th grade annex area to meet your student for pictures, etc. They can leave after the walk.
Graduating Senior Walk is Tomorrow: We will host graduating seniors as they return to Hill for an assembly presentation and graduation walk of their own tomorrow, May 20th. If you have or know an interested senior, they can wear their cap & gown or a college shirt and begin gathering out front. At 7:25 am or so, we will begin bringing in all present seniors to our cafeteria stage area for a special assembly. At the assembly, we will have students quickly share about themselves and a favorite Hill memory. For those not interested in being on stage, we will have those students go to the library to wait. We will also be announcing winners of the Suzanne and Vincent Torres Hill Elementary Alumni Scholarship at the assembly. Following this, we will all move to the library to begin the graduation walk, likely around 8:00 am or so. We look forward to celebrating the graduating class of 2024! Parents/ guardians interested can view the assembly in the very back of the gym and view the walk by the yellow brick wall in the front of the school. All visiting parents/guardians should check into the office prior to viewing the events.
Student Technology Returns: As we approach the end of the school year, we will be collecting all student devices and chargers. This is especially important for our 5th graders, who will be transitioning to middle school and will receive devices that are new to them. For 5th graders who do not return a charger, there will be a replacement cost of $30. It is important to note that a paid-off charger is required to receive a new device in middle school. All students, regardless of grade level, must return their technology. Many grade levels kept devices at school this year so it is not applicable. For 3rd and 4th-grade students, devices and chargers will be returned to students at the beginning of the next school year. Again, if a student has lost a charger, they will need to pay the replacement fee in order to receive another one.
Hill School will be an enclosed campus for the fall! We are pleased that work has begun to add safety fencing to the back area of our school to fully enclose our space. This will be a first for our campus. We will message more on this as we begin the fall. For now, please know that there will be construction work going on in the back of the campus throughout the summer for these additions.
School Supply Reminder from PTA: Our online school supply store is officially open for the 2024-2025 school year. Skip the trip to the store and get your teacher requested supplies delivered directly to the classroom. Ordering couldn't be easier. Just go to www.sproutsupplies.com and enter school code HES003. When you order online you are also raising funds for Hill Elementary.
Hill again received the designation this year as a No Place for Hate campus for the 23-24 school year. Dillo Cheer to our two counselors for their support of this important distinction!
Each year AISD participates in the 5 Book Dive. Information and resources can be found at https://tinyurl.com/5BookDive. The website shares lists of recommended summer reads by level (K-2 English, K-2 Spanish, 3-5 English, 3-5 Spanish, Middle School, and High School). The 5 Book Dive program encourages students to read any five books they choose, but provides these librarian-curated lists for inspiration. Check it out as it has other great resources to get your students reading this summer!
Hill is in need of several new members to join our Campus Advisory Council this upcoming fall. In working with this group, you have the opportunity to support our school in many ways, from campus safety to campus priorities. This is a two year commitment but such an important part of our community that helps guide our decision-making throughout the year. You can click here for the application. Please return completed applications to teresa.carroll@austinisd.org.
Over the summer, your household may experience food insecurity. Please see the message below this letter for information on where you can find free meals and food for your family over the next couple of months, including during the day at AISD campuses.
Have a beautiful summer! We look forward to seeing everyone back on campus for our Meet the Teacher event in August.
Sincerely,
Principal Drummond
